Windows 3.1

If installing RALLY! under Windows 3.1, from the root directory of the CD, manually run SETUP.EXE and select the 16-bit install option.

2. How do I install a new version of RALLY! over my existing version?

NOTE:If you are running 16-bit RALLY! and are upgrading to the 32-bit version, it is not recommended that you remove your existing version.

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs to remove the existing version of RALLY!.
  3. Follow the installation procedure described in question 1.

NOTE:  The sessions and configuration options defined in the previous version of RALLY! are carried over to the new version.

3. When making a connection, the router appears asking for a user ID and password, which is then followed by a sign-on screen. Is it possible to enter the user ID and password once?

Yes. There are two ways to do this.

4. How can I configure a new session?

Using the New Session Wizard, you have the option of creating a session when you first start RALLY! or when you're working in an open session.

To create a session, you must provide the New Session Wizard with the following information.

Session type: Display or printer.

Connection type and settings: See complete listing of connection types.

File transfer type: FTP or SQL over APPC. The file transfer type must be applicable to the selected host type.

The Wizard creates a session with many default settings, which determine how the session appears, operates, and interacts with your AS/400 application. You can later edit these settings to accommodate your preferences.

Creating a session

These instructions are for creating a new session from an open session. If creating a new session immediately after installation, skip to step 2.

  1. From the File menu, choose New Session, or click the New Session button on the toolbar.
  2. Select a session type and click Next.
  3. Select a connection type and click Next.
  4. Set the host options for the selected connection and click Next.
  5. Select a file transfer type.
  6. Verify the settings, and then click Finish. The new session appears.
  7. From the File menu, choose Save Session.

You can save the session with any name. The default file extensions indicate the session type: .EDP for display sessions, and .EPP for printer sessions.

Tip:To create a new session with a profile identical or similar to an existing session, use the Save Session As command instead of the New Session Wizard.

5. How can I set up a custom productivity scheme?

When using RALLY!, the following aspects of your display sessions can be customized.

Customizing RALLY! helps identify specific sessions at a glance, speeds up performance with custom functions, and provides the flexibility to make jobs easier.

Setting up a custom productivity scheme

  1. From the Edit menu, click Settings. The Settings dialog box appears.
  2. Select the category for which you want to create a custom scheme. This dialog box is a framework for the pages used to edit settings. The Categories list holds all the items you can edit.
  3. From the Categories list, select the appropriate page for editing an item. The OK, Cancel, and Apply buttons apply to changes made on any Settings page. Therefore, you can use the Apply button to immediately apply a change, and then pick another item from the Categories list and continue to edit your settings until you click OK. The Help button brings up help on the currently displayed Settings page.
  4. To create a new QuickPad, Toolbar, or keyboard map scheme, click New. This allows you to build your own scheme for a specific host page or application.

    6. How do I automate session startup?

To automate the startup process, add one of the following to your Windows Startup.

Desktop layouts allow you to open one or more windows in a prearranged position on your screen. Desktop layouts are especially useful for running multiple sessions. For example, you can consistently work with three display sessions and one printer session. In addition, you can have a QuickPad open for each display session. If saved in a layout, the session windows and the QuickPads will always appear exactly as you positioned them.

    Using a desktop layout

    1. Create one or more sessions and then open them.
    2. Customize and position the sessions on your desktop as you want. For example, place each session in a quadrant of your screen depending on the number of open sessions you have initiated.
    3. Once the sessions are active and placed on your desktop the way you want, select Save Layout from the File menu. This creates an .ELF file.

The next time you use RALLY!, you can select opening an existing layout in the Start by dialog box, and the sessions will open just as they were defined and saved.

    7. What are the file transfer options?

RALLY! supports two file transfer options: FTP or SQL over APPC.

SQL has distinct advantages over FTP. SQL over APPC provides for various computer file types, as well as handling "packed" (AS/400 compressed) data and negative numbers properly.

FTP performs a raw file transfer. Queries are not supported. FTP transfers can be performed on both data and source files but are most appropriate for source files. RALLY! can also convert EBCDIC/ASCII and vice versa. By default, .TXT, .INI, and .BAT files convert (assumed to be text) and all others are left intact (assumed to be binaries).

    Setting up a file transfer

    1. From the Tools menu, click Transfer File. The File Transfer dialog box appears. If the Transfer File option is not available, from the Options menu, click Session Type. The Session Type dialog box appears. In the File transfer protocol box, select SQL or FTP.
    2. Once the File Transfer dialog box is available, fill in the desired AS/400 and computer file information. Use the Options on the toolbar for host and computer settings, SQL Query, Formats, and Preferences.

    8. How do I perform a batch file transfer using RALLY!?

File transfer configuration files are given an .E5T extension but have the same format as RALLY!'s .ATO files. To perform a batch file transfer, the executable FT5250.EXE file is run with command line options specifying the .E5T file(s) and overriding options. Because multiple files can be named using DOS-like wildcards, a single icon can be set up to transfer multiple files.

    Batch transfer options

-Cd       Disables closing the application when done

-Ce       Enables closing the application when done

    -Ad       Disables autorun

    -Ae       Enables autorun

-N         Disables the complete notification box

-W        Disables the overwrite warning message

    -M        Minimizes when run

NOTE:Most of these options are also available in the Preferences dialog box. From the Tools menu, click Transfer File, click Options, and then click Preferences.

    Batch file transfer example

Assume multiple .E5T files are in the C:\Program Files\E!PC\Schemes\ directory. A shortcut can be created that will run: C:\Progra~1\E!PC\ft5250.exe" -W C:\progra~1\e!pc\schemes\test.e5T.

This will run, without overwrite warnings, and transfer the file as specified by each TEST.E5T. To be completely automated, the connection option must be configured with an authorized user ID and password.

    9. How do I automate a file transfer?

With 32-bit RALLY!, file transfers are stored as .E5T files, which can be initiated from Windows Explorer, from a Windows Run command, or from a shortcut (icon).

For automated or unattended multiple file transfers, use the FT5250 utility. Deselect default message options (for example, "Notify when complete") by using the File Transfer Options and selecting Preferences. Depending upon the Windows directory name, double quotes (") may be required to avoid file not found errors.

    Examples

    • To perform a single transfer

      D:\EPC610\ft5250.exe d:\epc610\schemes\testxfer1.e5t

    • To perform multiple file transfers

      D:\EPC610\ft5250.exe d:\epc610\schemes\testxfer1.e5t

      D:\epc610\schemes\testxfer2.e5t

    • Use the "*" wildcard to run all file transfer requests that meet the specified file name criteria.

      D:\EPC610\ft5250.exe d:\epc610\schemes\test*.e5t

    • Use the "-W" parameter to disable the "Overwrite existing file?" warning prompt.

      D:\EPC610\ft5250.exe -W d:\epc610\schemes\testxfer1.e5t

    • Use double quotes for long file names such as "Program Files."

      D:\Program Files\E!PC\ft5250" -W " D:\Program Files\E!PC\Schemes\T1.E5T"

    • Use the "~1" naming convention to replace long file names such as "Program Files."

      D:\Progra~1\E!PC\ft5250 -W D:\Progra~1\ E!PC\Schemes\T1.E5T

    10. How can I configure a printer session?

RALLY! allows you to print host files on your local printer or on any network printer. With RALLY!, you can:

Before you can print host data, a printer session must be opened. Opening a printer session establishes a connection between your computer, the host, and the printer.

    1. From the File menu, click New Session, or click the New Session button on the toolbar.
    2. Select the printer session and click Next.
    3. Select a connection type and click Next.
    4. Set the options for the selected connection and click Next.
    5. Verify the settings, and then click Finish. A new session appears.
    6. From the File menu, click Save Session.

You can save the session with any name. The default file extension .EPP indicates a printer session.

Tip: To create a new session with a profile identical or similar to an existing session, use the Save As command instead of the New Session Wizard.
